Her portrait hung quietly, maybe now like a warning, within the glut of images, tourist legs, sunscreen, iPhones, and eyes dried up from the callous of information: a flood of abolishing the capacity for differentiation. How to move underneath or press against this apathetic numb? Dried paint, dried up, dried of feeling, dried of energy, dried of fear, dried of effort, dried of news and perspectives and the pace of attention, impending disaster. Even with history there, all exposed, dressed up or turned out, it could not seem to cut through. But there was something in the dried— the tangy dried apricot, the French kitchen green of a dried cardamom pod, dry humor, even clothes holding the momentary heat of the dryer. At the hardware store— the very shop for fixing and building— there was a rotating rack of seeds. Just little pellet nothings in a paper packet, sold for $2.99. They spun the carousel and remembered sticking toothpicks in the avocado seed, and its glorious metamorphosis in the kitchen window. Of course there was the girl on the wall at the museum, but there was also the dense hydrated air of a Lihue landing, wet soil in Maine like a lotion for lungs, or a toy hospital in Japan. The wet and dry as clothes for one another.
