Though they were standing patiently, with their spines out on display, he would probably not read the books on his shelves, not even open them again. But how beautiful that they sat with all the weight of their words, illusory polite containers of every subversion in quite radical waiting. They lifted his mood with the perhaps pathetic and profound relief of knowing there was company there, if only he were to open them— maybe the best of company. That all this care went into laying their letters, weighted the apartment from floating somewhere else, their ideas released to travel everywhere, or at least wherever he could imagine taking them.
